At the National Muslim Prayer and Thanksgiving service held at the National Mosque in Accra, President John Dramani Mahama expressed deep concern over the loss of lives during the December 7 election, calling for justice and accountability.
While acknowledging the peaceful nature of the election, President Mahama lamented the deaths of five citizens during the process. He also recalled similar incidents in the 2020 elections, where eight lives were lost, emphasising the need for immediate action to prevent such tragedies in the future.
“Even though this election passed on peacefully, we must recognise that a few of our citizens lost their lives. My understanding is almost five of our citizens were killed in the process of the election. This is not the first time—in 2020, we know that eight of our citizens were killed. If these continue and justice is not served, then what it does is it breeds impunity,” he stated.
President Mahama reiterated his party’s commitment to ensuring accountability, announcing that steps had already been taken to address the issue. “That’s why, as a party, we have said that we must investigate and find out what led to these killings so that we can take action, so that they don’t happen again,” he said.
He revealed plans to engage the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney General’s Department to expedite investigations and ensure fair compensation for the bereaved families.
“I’ve asked my Executive Secretary to write to the IGP to give us a report on the status of investigations into these killings. Justice must be done. And we also will ask the Attorney General, when he takes office, to determine fair and adequate compensation for the families of those who have lost their lives,” President Mahama added.
President Mahama, running on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress, won the election with 56.42 per cent of valid votes cast.
