The Northern Region has recorded an astronomical increase in the cost of damage to properties from fire incidents in the year 2025.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in its 2025 report released, has shown that 377 fire incidents were recorded between January 1 to December 31, 2025, compared to 373 recorded in 2024
This rate of increase in the fire outbreaks recorded for the period under review was 1% and 4 in absolute figures.
However, the cost of damage to people’s properties in the year 2024 was estimated at GHS 68,217,224 but the figure increased significantly to an GHS 159,081,662 in 2025.
The Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of GNFS, Assistant Divisional Officer Grade I (ADOI), Hudu Baba in a statement disclosed that an amount of GHS 150,629,102,789 worth of properties was also salvaged from these fires for the period under review as against GHS 1,024,438,464 for the same period in 2024.
He disclosed that an average of 1 fire was recorded in a day during the year 2025. The months of January and December recorded the highest fire outbreaks of 65 and 52, representing 17.2% and 13.8%, respectively.
Domestic fires led by 148, commercial 54, electrical 54, and bushfires 14. The rest are vehicular 17, institutional 17, industrial (2), and other fires (19).
Additionally, 145 out-before-arrival cases were recorded in 2025 as against 143 for the same period in 2024.
ADOI Baba lamented two lives were lost for the year as a result of fire outbreaks in the region, adding that no life was, however, lost through flooding, depths, bee evasion, or heights rescue.
“On the Road Traffic Collision (RTC) front, the year under review recorded 1 casualty (injury), while 2 lives were unfortunately lost through 4 road traffic collision incidents in 2025 as against 20 casualties (injuries), 4 lives been lost through 5 incidents for the same period in 2024, indicating a decrease,” he stated.
Mr. Hudu Baba further observed a trend of fire incidents involving uncompleted buildings for the past two years. He said the rate of fires involving uncompleted buildings in 2025 stood at 17 representing 4.5%.
