Queenmothers of Akuapem in the Eastern Region have joined calls for all political parties to prioritize the nomination of female candidates as flagbearers, running mates, and Members of Parliament in the 2024 elections.
Recognizing the inherent capabilities of women to contribute positively to societal development, the Queen mothers highlighted iconic female leaders such as Margaret Thatcher, Angela Merkel, and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, underscoring their exceptional leadership.
They affirmed that women are more than capable as agents of positive change.
The moves follow calls toward gender inclusivity in politics started by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) and The Women’s Alliance, demanding political parties to nominate women as running mates for this year’s election.
Expressing gratitude to former President John Mahama and the NDC for choosing a female running mate in the previous election, the group anticipates and encourages a repetition of such gender-inclusive decisions across all political spectrums.
The Queen mothers extended their appeal to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its leader, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and urged them to consider the call for increased female representation in key political positions.
The group emphasized the importance of fostering an environment that supports female candidates, echoing a plea to NPP delegates to actively support and champion female contenders in the upcoming party primaries.
As the political landscape evolves, the spotlight on gender diversity continues to intensify, with advocates hopeful that their efforts will catalyse a positive shift towards a more inclusive political sphere.
