Savelugu NPP polls: All incumbent constituency executives voted out

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) last Saturday (April 29, 2023) organized its Savelugu Constituency Executives election in preparation towards the 2024 general elections. Nine out of the ten incumbent executives were seeking reelection but were all booted out.

The former Constituency Chairman, Alhassan Saani and Women’s Organizer, Hamidu Kande who lost their positions made a comeback and were reelected.

The former Chairman secured 280 votes out of total valid votes of 657 to defeat his four competitors. Hamidu Kande on the other hand polled 315 votes to beat her closest contender, Adam Abiba, who had 310 votes.

The incumbent communications director, Abukari Gafaru, was declared the new Assistant Secretary after he polled 305 votes to beat to his closest contender, Mohammed Zakaria Gunu, 281, and Abubakari Bawah, 73.

For the substantive secretaryship position, Abdul Razak Yussif, was declared the new NPP constituency secretary after he garnered 286 votes and his closest contender having 100 votes.

The first Vice Chairman was won by Abukari Amadu with 304 votes and Mohammed Nurideen Mbanba elected second Vice Chairman with 295 votes.

The Youth Organizer position which was keenly contested by eight candidates saw Issahaku Iddi John emerged victorious with a massive 267 votes with Issahaku Iddrisu coming second with 86 votes.

Nantogma Illiasu narrowly won as the new constituency organizer position with seven votes. He polled 228 votes against Abdulai Yakubu who had 221 votes.

For the Treasurer position, Mohammed Sawarugu Ibrahim was elected replace the incumbent, Imoro Alhassan, who did not seek reelection. He polled 311 votes against Baba Gazali who also had 232 votes.

Abubakari Osman also emerged as winner of the 3-man race for the Nasara Coordinator position. He secured 281 votes against Salifu Abdul Gafaru, 251 votes, and Mohammed H. Saakibu, 130 votes.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the constituency elections committee, Mr. Haruna Mohammed, who is the NPP Deputy General Secretary in an earlier interview told THE CUSTODIAN the Savelugu seat will become an NPP seat after the 2024 general elections.

He noted after every electoral competition there comes cooperation and assured the necessary steps would be taken to reconcile and unite the rank and file of the party in the constituency.   

“…This committee is very much aware that after this competition, we need to make sure that together with the new leadership, we’re able to bring everyone on board. And if you look at the forms that they picked to contest the elections, the rules were clearly defined that we need everybody together, elections winning is about numbers, not about individualism and we will use the human resource of the party to win the 2024 elections” he stated.
