The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has announced a 10% increase in monthly pensions for all 261,920 pensioners on its payroll as of December 31, 2025.
The 2026 indexation rate, approved in consultation with the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) and in line with Section 80 of the National Pensions Act, 2008 (Act 766), combines a fixed 6% adjustment with a redistributed amount of GHS91.56 from the remaining 4%.
Under the new structure, the minimum pension will rise from GHS300 to GHS409.56 per month for existing pensioners—representing a 36.52% increase due to the redistribution mechanism. New entrants to the Scheme in 2026 will receive a minimum pension of GHS400.
The highest-earning pensioner will see monthly benefits increase from GHS201,792.37 to GHS213,991.47.
Speaking at the announcement in Accra, SSNIT Director-General Kwesi Afreh Biney said the adjustment aims to cushion lower-earning pensioners in line with the solidarity principle of social security. He noted that unlike the 12% increase in 2025—implemented when inflation stood at 23.8%—the 2026 increase of 10% outpaces the December 2025 inflation rate of 5.4%.
“The current indexation is higher than the recent inflation rate, meaning every pensioner on the payroll has been protected,” he said, adding that the increment reflects SSNIT’s commitment to pensioner welfare and long-term fund sustainability.
Chief Actuary Evelyn Adjei explained that the rate was based on salary growth among contributors, projected average inflation of 8 ± 2% for 2025, and an assessment of the Fund’s long-term sustainability. About 70% of pensioners will receive the full 10% adjustment, adding an estimated GHS616.6 million to SSNIT’s 2026 payout obligations. The Scheme is expected to disburse over GHS7 billion in pensions next year, averaging more than GHS580 million monthly.
Frank Mobila, General Manager of Benefits, said the increase reinforces SSNIT’s commitment to safeguarding pensioners’ purchasing power while maintaining the Scheme’s sustainability.
As of December 2025, SSNIT had 261,920 pensioners and 2.1 million active contributors, two-thirds of whom were in the private sector.
