Sammi Awuku, NPP National Organiser

The National Organiser of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to stop the street protests and to resort to the law courts to have its electoral grievances resolved.

The NDC has embarked on a series of street protests nationwide to express concerns over what they say is a flawed election.

Aside from grievances at the constituency level, the NDC has also rejected the outcome of the presidential election which saw Nana Akufo-Addo declared President-elect.

During their protests, the supporters mostly chant “No Mahama, No Peace” in a bid to have former president John Mahama declared the winner of the 2020 presidential polls.

However, the NPP National Organiser in a Citi News interview urged the NDC leadership to take a cue from what the NPP did in 2012.

“In all honesty, I feel the pain of the NDC youth and supporters, but I disagree with them on their approach. I am not saying the NPP are saints because we were in a similar instant in 2012 but the party leadership as quickly as possible galvanized the base of the party, addressed the people, and then gave them hope of heading to the court but up to date, the reason why you have these protests ongoing is that, the NDC does not believe that they have to end this case in court but believes Jean Mensa must overturn the results which have already been gazetted.”

“So how do you seek redress on the streets unless you are telling me that the new form of democracy is on the streets. I agree that it is right to protest but those rights must also be within the confinement of our laws.”

Mr. Awuku noted that the protests by the opposition NDC have caused some discomfort for the governing party.

“The NDC protests have put a lot of strain and stress on the NPP leadership because many of our supporters also wanted to end on the streets to challenge the NDC in what they are doing which may lead to a point of no return.”
