The Northern Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Mohammed Abdul Salam, has defined the caliber of personality the party must select in the upcoming parliamentary primaries to be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, in the Tamale Central constituency.
The NDC General Secretary, Fiifi Fiave Kwetey on Wednesday, August 20, issued a statement announcing the guidelines for the conduct of the internal election ahead of the 30th September by-election in the Tamale Central constituency to elect a replacement for the Member of Parliament for the area, Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala, who sadly died recently in a military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.
Consequently, several names of bigwigs of the party have popped up including former Mayor of Tamale, Abdul Rahaman Hanan Gundadow, Professor Alidu Seidu, the Executive Secretary of Water Resources Commission, Princess Naama Salifu, a female Ghanaian Diplomat, Dr Seidu Fiter, a lecturer at University for Development Studies among others.
However, reacting to this development in an interview on a local radio station in Tamale, Mohammed Abdul Salam, who is the Director General of the National Lottery Authority stated that the standard set by the late legislator and former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology was so high that the party would have to elect someone who is on the speed to fly but not crawling.
Responding to whether the NDC in the Tamale Central constituency have individuals with such capabilities, the outspoken Abdul Salam said:
“I dare say that they have far higher number of individuals with capabilities to be able to represent them in Parliament and to aspire to get to the height that Hon Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala got to.”
“There are people who can aspire to that but the mark [as we all agree], the standard that was set is so high, that, if we were to take it that Murtala was in the flying zone, you need to pick a candidate who [probably] is on the speed to fly.
“You don’t need to pick a candidate who is now going to learn to crawl, learn to walk, learn to run before learning to even attempt to fly let alone to fly,” he stated.
