The Tamale main Sub station for the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) sub-station warehouse in the Northern Region has been engulfed by fire on Sunday, March 2, 2025.

The inferno caused massive destruction to some of the electricity infrastructure worth millions of Ghana cedis. The facilities destroyed included transformers, high tension cables, and meters among others.

Firefighters from the Tamale Metro Fire Station and Tamale Teaching Hospital Fire Station who were dispatched to the disaster scene upon a distressed call in at 1423 hours were able to contain the situation at about 1752 hours.

The Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of Ghana National Fire Service, ADOII Baba Hudu, told THE Custodian in an interview that initial investigation reveals that the outbreak was caused an explosion from one of the transformers at the sub station.

The explosion, he asserted caused a spark which resulted to a fire that got involved with other combustible materials, spreading widely to other parts of the warehouse.

ADOII Baba Hudu has therefore cautioned the general public with the inflammable materials since the period the period is very volatile. He noted the environment is very dried up and the moisture content in everything is consumed by the harsh weather condition and for that matter people should always take safety precautions in their daily activities.

“At least property owners should be taking risk assessment on daily basis so that they will be able to unravel the possible causes of fire. If this is done, at least, it would either prevent or reduce some of these fire incidents” he maintained.

He observed the increasing number of fire outbreaks in the region barely three months into 2025. He revealed the northern region between January 2025 and now has recorded over one hundred incidents of fire which is more than the number same time last year.

“The situation is not pleasant I will say because if you look at January, we recorded 67 fires, February (54) fires – so averagely we have already recorded 100 plus fires within two months which I think, compared to last year [the whole of last year], we recorded 373 fire outbreaks” he pointed out.

Consequently, Mr. Baba Hudu emphasized this is something that everyone should be concerned about in the region.
