The Tamale District Court 1, presided over by His Worship, Justice Stephen Tabiri, has remanded the aged man, believed to be in his 50s, into police custody for defiling and impregnating a 14-year-old girl.
The accused person was charged with defilement under the Criminal Offences Act and the Children’s Act, 1998 (Act 560) and abortion under Section 58 of the Criminal Code as amended.
The Prosecution presenting the case today Thursday prayed the court to remand the accused person while they conclude investigations.
The prosecutor argued that granting bail to the accused person may compromise the ongoing investigations and therefore the reason they’re praying the court to remand him.
Lawyer for the accused person opposed the request of the prosecution, praying the court to grant him bail. The Defense Counsel argued that the accused person has been in police custody beyond the mandatory 48-hrs which was against his constitutional right.
He noted the accused person has also cooperated with investigators since his arrest on Monday, February 16.
The Counsel indicated that all offences in the Republic are bailable, including murde,r and this particular case is not an exception.
However, the Presiding Judge in his ruling remanded the accused person into police custody for two weeks.
The case was further adjourned to Wednesday, March 4, 2026, for the trial to commence.
