The New Patriotic Party, NPP, in the Tamale North constituency in the northern region has organised its Electoral Area Coordinators elections on Saturday, March 19, 2022. The NPP has eleven electoral areas in the Tamale North constituency.
Out of the number, two electoral areas: Kalpohin electoral area and Taha/Kpawumo electoral area had more than one candidates who picked nomination and filed to participate in today’s polls.
Twenty one (21) delegates voted in the Taha/Kpawumo electoral area and fifty one (51) people also voted in the Kalpohin electoral area.
After the polls, the incumbent coordinator for Taha/Kpawumo, Yabdow Abdul Karim, had zero votes and his contender, Fuseini Abdul Somed, pulled 16 votes, representing 76.19 percent. However, two ballot papers were rejected and the incumbent coordinator and two delegates failed to turnout.
On the other hand, the incumbent Coordinator for Kalpohin, Hamza Mohammed, was retained after he polled 31 votes representing 60.78 percent and Mohammed Suale Alhassan had 19 votes, representing 37.25 percent.
Peaceful elections
Mr. Yakubu Abdallah Iddrisu, the constituency secretary who supervised the elections said the party is experiencing such elections at the grassroot level in the constituency for the first time. He, therefore, commended the two electoral areas for conducting themselves peacefully before, during and after the elections.
“Let me add that, this is the first time that we’re experiencing it in the constituency” he stressed.
He noted such contest at the party’s local level means the governing NPP has become more attractive and that people are getting interested to lead the affairs of the party.
According to Abdallah Iddrisu, the remaining nine electoral areas had consensus for their coordinators to stand unopposed.
This, he added was part of the democratic practice of the party and further intimated it is a good sign that there is unity in the constituency.
Taha/Kpawumo venue change
The Secretary revealed the center for the conduct of the Taha/Kpawumo elections had to be changed because there is chieftaincy stalemate in the traditional jurisdiction necessitating the move for the delegates to vote at Kalpohin.
“In fact, let me add that, Taha/Kpawumo, we didn’t hold the elections at their electoral area – we brought them to Kalpohin because that place is volatile area and we don’t want to go and put more flames there, and there is no distance between Taha and Kalpohin, therefore, we asked them to come join Kalpohin” he explained.
In a related, the Tamale South constituency will organize similar elections seven electoral areas on Saturday and another seven areas on Sunday, March 20, 2022.
Similarly are expected to be held in the other constituencies in the northern region before the impending constituency executives elections slated in April 2022.
Meanwhile, the governing NPP is conducting elections across various electoral areas in the northern region from 18 March, to Sunday, March 20, 2022.
