Educational infrastructure is still a major challenge undermining the provision of quality teaching and learning in Ghana, particularly in the northern part of the country.
Pupils in many parts of the Northern Region, most especially in rural communities, continue to learn under very deplorable conditions.
According to the Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC) report on Improving Education and Infrastructure in Ghana in 2017, the quality of school facilities and materials has the potential to affect the quality of education provided to students.
On the back of this, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tamale North constituency, Hon Alhassan Suhuyini, has constructed a two-storey classroom block for the Kalpohin Senior High School and a 3-unit classroom and auxiliary facilities at the Gumani Methodist basic school.
Similarly, the lawmaker who doubles as the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways has also undertaken a robust rehabilitation exercise of some existing schools in the area.
This includes a 4-unit classroom block at the Kalpohin Junior High School block ‘B’ and 6unit classroom block at Kanvili Nujuumul Islamic School to enable effective teaching and learning in the beneficiary schools.
Addressing the media during a brief handing over of these facilities last Friday, January 30, 2026, Alhassan Suhuyini described education as the foundation for the growth and development of every child.
He noted that a good learning environment motivates both the teacher and the student to put up their best.
The MP maintained that the learning environment must always be conducive, which will eventually propel the area to be among the best-performing districts in the Northern Region.
”We’re not among the best-performing districts when it comes to education in the region, and that I want to change, and I think the best way to do that is to first of all improve the learning environment.

“And it is the reason why we are renovating some of these existing schools that have deteriorated over the years, and we are also constructing new ones to complement the existing structures and provide them with furniture,” he stated.
Mr. Suhuyini said inadequate furniture is also a major bottleneck undermining effective teaching and learning, stressing that children in some schools lie on the floor to learn.
As a teacher by profession, the Tamale North legislator indicated education remains his priority and reaffirmed his commitment to addressing these challenges to improve the learning outcomes in the area.
The MP’s intervention addresses the UN sustainable development goals 4 and 10, which talk about an inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all and reducing inequalities, respectively, by 2030.
Meanwhile, the lawmaker has also constructed a septic tank and borehole with a stand to power a water closet toilet facility at Kalpohin and a fence wall, security room and youth office at the Choggu public toilet.
