The Member of Parliament (MP) for Gushegu in the Northern, Mr. Alhassan Tampuli, has expressed optimism that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will clinch a resounding one-touch victory for its presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the December 7, 2024 general election.
Mr. Tampuli pointed out that the Vice President’s growing influence in the five regions of the North and his growing popularity as the NPP’s presidential candidate would ensure the first round victory for the governing party.
“We are winning this election in the first round. The crowd that came to see the Vice President in the north was remarkable. People are clear in their minds about who they want to lead them.
“The NDC might be preparing for a second round, but we are confident we won’t need one,” Mr. Tampuli who is also the Deputy Minister for Transport stated.
Speaking at a mammoth rally in his constituency last Thursday, the NPP lawmaker disclosed that it is very difficult for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the entire northern region.
According to him, this prompted the party’s chairman in the Gushegu constituency to question that if the NDC has given up on the region they should inform them because the Gushegu MP is bullying them.
According to him, he is not bullying anyone and that it is the development the NPP government and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia have brought to the five regions of the North that is bullying the NDC.
He outlined his personal efforts in agriculture, education, electrification, and infrastructure, which he indicated, have significantly improved the lives of his constituents.
Women empowerment
Explaining his commitment to empowering women in agriculture, Mr. Tampuli explained that his “One Woman, One Acre” initiative has enabled women across the constituency to farm at minimal costs.
He has also provided five tractors available to farmers, who only need to cover the cost of fuel to clear their lands.
“The tractors are available for all. All you have to do is pay for the fuel, and we handle the maintenance. This has never happened in the history of this constituency,” he added.
He noted that as a famer himself, he has donated fertilizer and farming tools to farmers, as well as recruited individuals to work on his own farms, providing an additional source of income to community members.
“I have supported about 5,000 women so far. I not only go to farm on my own; I hire locals to help and support their livelihoods,” he added.
Touching on education, the Gushegu MP indicated that in a bid to enhance educational opportunities, he has personally invested over GH¢2 million in constructing a new senior high school in Kpatinga, one of the communities in his region.
He noted that while the GETFund awarded the contract, it did not contribute any funds to the project, which is nearing completion.
Mr. Tampuli disclosed that there was only one senior high school in the entire Gushegu district before he initiated this project and put in his own resources to see it through because it is the single largest request from both NPP and NDC supporters in the constituency.
He added that he also built teachers’ quarters, which he sees as essential for attracting and retaining educators in the area.
The MP recognised that if teachers do not have a decent place to stay, they leave hence the need to balance between putting up new classroom blocks and ensuring the teachers stay in them to teach.
Electrification and infrastructure
Speaking on gains he has made on electrification and infrastructure, Mr. Tampuli disclosed that he has provided electricity to many rural communities since becoming an MP.
“I have brought electricity to 40 communities and working to expand it to 15 more before the December elections.
“This is unprecedented. In just three years, I have provided electricity to more communities than was achieved in 24 years before me,” he stated proudly.
Road projects
The MP also stressed the importance of road infrastructure in Gushegu.
Several previously inaccessible areas now have new roads, making travel within the district faster and safer.
“Roads that used to be footpaths are now fully constructed. A journey that once took five hours can now be done in less than an hour,” he explained.
Mr. Tampuli indicated that telecommunications infrastructure has also improved under his tenure, facilitating the installation of cell towers in remote areas and solving connectivity issues that have long hindered economic activity and security.
“Without network access, students couldn’t do research, and we faced security challenges. Now, with network coverage, we are addressing multiple issues simultaneously,” he said.
Mr. Tampuli expressed pride in his record, which he feels sets a new standard for Gushegu and demonstrates the NPP’s commitment to local development.
“I am the only person capable of meeting and even surpassing my record.
“I have worked tirelessly to ensure that the people of Gushegu receive the infrastructure and support they deserve,” he stressed.
Mr. Tampuli believes that with these accomplishments the NPP is poised to secure a strong mandate in Gushegu and across the northern region come December.
