The Ministry of Information has announced a temporary closure of several roads in Accra to ensure a secure and seamless inauguration ceremony for President-elect John Mahama.

The closures, effective on January 7, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, will affect key areas around Parliament House and Independence Square.

1. Parliament House:

  • Osu Traffic Light to Parliament House.
  • AU Roundabout.
  • Access roads to Parliament from the Electoral Commission to the center of Parliament House.
  • Security area within the Parliament House premises.
  • Road from Osu Cemetery to Parliament House.

Note: Access will be restricted to parliamentarians, parliamentary staff, and their vehicles.

2. Independence Square:

  • 28th February Road from CEPS Headquarters to Castle Road Junction.
  • Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on Lokko Street.
  • Castle Road from AU Circle to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light.
  • Starlet 91 Road, closed at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection.

Traffic Diversions

To minimise disruptions, the following diversions will be in place:

  • Traffic from 28th February Road (La, Labone, and Osu) heading to the Central Business District (CBD) will be redirected onto Salem Avenue at Castle Traffic Light, connecting to Oxford Street.
  • Vehicles on John Evans Atta Mills High Street heading towards Black Star Square will be diverted onto Liberia Road at CEPS Headquarters Traffic Light, linking to the National Theatre Traffic Lights Intersection.
  • Motorists on Lokko Street heading towards Castle Road should use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street.
  • Traffic from AU Circle to Castle Road through Osu Cemetery Traffic Light will be rerouted via Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads to connect with Abdul Nassar Gamel Road near the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

The Ministry has urged motorists to use alternative routes and comply with directives from security personnel.

The temporary closures are essential to ensure the safety of dignitaries and the public attending the event.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate the public’s cooperation in making the inauguration a success,” stated Lily Fati Soale, Acting Chief Director, in a press release.

Motorists and commuters are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly to avoid delays.
