A global surge of interest has marked the search for the next Black Stars head coach, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirming that over 600 applications have been received for the position.
GFA President Kurt Okraku made the disclosure following the removal of Otto Addo on March 31, 2026, even after he led Ghana to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Reappointed on March 15, 2024, Addo had been given the responsibility of rebuilding the national team after Chris Hughton’s exit. His initial tenure stood out for guiding Ghana past Nigeria to reach the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The technical committee had supported his return, pointing to expectations of stability, tactical structure, and improved results.
Addressing the strong response, Okraku noted the international appeal of the role: “We have received over 600 applications for the Black Stars job,” he stated in an interview with 3Sports.
He further explained that the GFA is carefully evaluating all candidates, prioritising experience, quality, and alignment with the long-term direction of Ghana football. A new head coach is expected to be named within the next one to two weeks.
The federation is considering both local and foreign applicants as part of a transparent and rigorous selection process aimed at appointing a coach capable of restoring confidence and achieving success.
With upcoming friendlies against Mexico and Wales in May, the incoming coach will have limited time to prepare the squad for the World Cup. Ghana’s group—featuring Panama, Croatia, and England—adds further weight to the importance of the appointment.
