Ya Naa Abukari II, King of the Dagbon State has expressed his anger and disappointment at the Municipal Chief Executive of Yendi, Ahmed Yussuf Abubakar and the Yendi Divisional Police Commander for their ineptitude after he informed about the shooting incident at Zakoli by assailants last Wednesday.
The Dagbon Overlord said the duo failed to report back to him pertaining to the meming of eight Fulani herdsmen in the farming community.
“I blame the MCE and Police Commander because they never got back to brief me about the situation. I directed for the MCE and Police Commander to be called about what I heard and they never got back to me whether what I heard was right or not” he asserted.
However, the Northern Regional Minister, Shani Alhassan Shaibu, who was at the Gbewa palace with his Regional Security Council members, had to quickly to intervene and pleaded for pardon on behalf of the MCE and the Police Chief.
He then briefed the King about the devastation caused to his subjects at Zakoli and urged him to collaborate with the security to find an amicable solution to the matter.
“The laws of Ghana do not condone crime and I want to make it clear that, the perpetrators will not go unpunished. The wheels of justice grinds slowly but it will certainly catch up on them” Alhaji Shani assured.
He said steps have been taken to release the deceased bodies to the families for burial on Friday in accordance with the Islamic tradition.
He further gave an assurance that the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) will respond swiftly by providing relief items to the victims.
Background
Some gunmen believed to be Konkombas raided the Zakoli community Wednesday afternoon and killed seven Fulani herdsmen. The eighth person according to police source died on the way to the Yendi government hospital.
It is unclear what provoked the assailants to wreak havoc on the Fulani settlements.
However, some of the people have attributed it to an alleged robbery attack and killing of a teacher believed to be a Konkomba man on the Yendi – Zabzugu road.
Meanwhile, the Yendi Municipal Chief Executive in a conversation said they were overwhelmed by the situation and could not even break his fast as expected.
