The Yooyili men’s volleyball team from the Savelugu municipality have been crowned champions of the maiden edition of the Regional Volleyball Association tournament spearheaded by the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tamale, Hon Sule Salifu.
Prince Tamakloe reports that it was all joy for the visitors who conquered all teams from the regional capital to lift after losing in their opening fixture to Real Tamale United (RTU) Volleyball Club.
“It was all joy for the people of Yoo Yili (Savelugu) as their men’s volleyball team won the maiden edition of the Northern Regional Volleyball Association Mayor’s Cup.”
The Savelugu team were the underdogs in the tournament and were written off winning the championship especially after they lost their first match to Real Tamale United Volleyball Club by 2/1.
However, a comeback to beat Eagles Volleyball Club by two straight sets and a two/one win over Safe Sets Volleyball Club from Tamale gave them a total of 6 points in the round ribbon competition to place them on top of the table.
RTU volleyball club placed second while Safe Sets and Eagles Volleyball Clubs placed 3rd and 4th respectively.
The Mayor of Tamale, Mr. Sule Salifu in his remarks applauded the NRVA for a successful competition and expressed his delight to be the first Mayor to be named after the volleyball competition.
He pledged to continue to support such initiatives that has the tendency of uniting the people of Tamale and developing talents in the northern region.
The First Vice Chairman of the Northern Regional Volleyball Association, Mr. Raymond Amoh, speaking on behalf of the Chairman, commended the Mayor for his presence, contribution and support towards a successful organization of the competition.
According to him, the initiative was a novelty in the annals of the Volleyball discipline, adding the competition will enable the association to unearth and develop volleyball talents in the northern region.
Mr. Amoh indicated the competition has also come to enhance the existing peace and unity in the regional capital.
By the results, Yoo Volleyball Club and Real Tamale United Volleyball Club have qualified for the Regional Minister’s Cup scheduled for March 6, 2023 in Tamale.
