Ten individuals have been taken into custody by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) after an operation targeting suspected drug distribution at the Koforidua Technical University (KTU) campus in the Eastern Region.
The arrests were carried out on the night of Friday, July 31, during activities marking the university’s SRC Week celebration.
According to NACOC, the operation followed intelligence suggesting that cannabis and cannabis-laced beverages were being sold to students and other patrons attending the event.
Those arrested include nine men and one woman. During the raid, officers recovered several items believed to contain cannabis, including wrapped substances suspected to be the narcotic, cups of “abele” ice cream, bottles of pineapple juice, sobolo, fresh palm wine and other drinks.
NACOC stated that preliminary field examinations on the seized products detected traces of cannabis, strengthening suspicions that the substances were intended for consumption at the event.
The suspects remain in custody and are assisting investigators as the Commission seeks to identify other individuals who may be linked to the alleged drug distribution network.
The Commission reiterated its resolve to clamp down on narcotics-related offences within educational institutions and encouraged members of the public to report suspicious drug activities to law enforcement agencies.
