Nine parliamentary aspirants in the Ashanti Region will not have the opportunity to contest in the upcoming primaries of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) on April 25, 2020.

This is because the Ashanti zone of the national parliamentary vetting committee of the party has disqualified the individuals involved after 10 days of thorough vetting of all the 121 aspiring parliamentary candidates in the region.

A memo issued by the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Secretary and Secretary to the vetting committee, Sam Pyne, in line with the party’s rules and regulations for the conduct of its parliamentary primaries did not however mention the names of the aspirants who were disqualified.

“Out of the 121 aspiring candidates, 106, comprising 12 females and 94 males, have been recommended to the National Executive Committee (NEC) for consideration; 5 aspiring candidates voluntarily withdrew from the contest; 9 aspiring candidates have not been recommended for various legitimate reasons; 14 aspiring candidates are going unopposed”, the memo announced.

Those going unopposed include MP for Suame and Majority Leader in Parliament Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu; MP for Atwima Mponua, Isaac Kwame Asiamah; MP for Manhyia South, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh; MP for Asokwa, Patricia Appiagyei; and MP for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

The rest are MP for Offinso, North Collins Ntim; MP for Kwabre East, Francisca Oteng-Mensah; MP for Afigya Sekyere East, Mavis Nkansah Boadu; MP for Ahafo Ano South West, Johnson Kwaku Adu; MP for Atwima Nwabiagya South, Emmanuel Adjei Anhwere; and MP for Afigya Kwabre South William Owuraku Aidoo.

The Vetting Committee extended its “appreciation to the Ashanti Regional party, constituency executives in the region, all the aspiring parliamentary candidates in the region and their supporters as well as the media for making exercise a huge success”.

The 106 recommended aspiring parliamentary candidates in the 44 constituencies of the Ashanti Region where the NPP has sitting MPs are given below:
