The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is warning of a huge repercussion if the collective fight against the Coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19) is allowed to wane.
According to the Association, non-adherence to the preventive measures at this point in the battle against the disease could erode all the gains that have been made so far.
This, it warned, has the propensity to escalate the spread of the disease further than would be anticipated.
In a statement jointly signed by Dr Frank Ankobea and Dr Justice Yankson, President and General Secretary respectively of the GMA, the Association urged the government to keep the country’s international borders closed until further notice.
“His Excellency the President of the Republic should also not lift the ban on social gatherings for religious activities, schools, marriage ceremonies, and funerals, etc.
“Government must ensure the prompt and continuous distribution of PPEs to all health workers at their various institutions (or places of work) at all times as this will guarantee the safety of all health workers as they continue to render care to patients,” the statement added.
The GMA warned that the COVID-19 pandemic is real and present in Ghana and is a major health threat to all persons living in the country.
The statement urged Ghanaians and all persons living in the jurisdiction to strictly adhere to all the preventive measures such as the ban on public and social gatherings, Social Distancing, use of face mask, hand washing under running water with soap, and use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
“Government should strictly enforce all the preventive measures so far put in place to ensure compliance,” the GMA said.
It appealed to all medical doctors and other health professionals to continue to dedicate themselves to the fight in the interest of Ghana in spite of the huge sacrifices.
