Eighteen (18) persons are feared dead following a head on collision between two Yutong buses with registration numbers GT 3345-16 and AC 1699-20 on the Tamale – Buipe highway in the Savannah region at dawn of Wednesday, 3 February, 2021.
Police in the Savannah region have confirmed the accident to THE CUSTODIAN.
According to the police, 45 passengers were on board in each of the two buses traveling from Kumasi in the Ashanti region to Zebila in the Upper East region and the other vehicle traveling from Garu in the Upper East region to Kumasi.
However, on reaching Sarekyekura near Fufulso on the Buipe – Tamale highway the vehicles collided head on.
The deceased persons include 12 male adults, 3 female adults and one female child and 45 people also sustaining various degrees of injury.
Inspector Adjekum Owusu, the Acting Savannah Region Police Public Relations Officer said the injured were rushed to the Buipe Polyclinic and Holistic Medicare Hospital for medical treatment.
He revealed one other female adult passed on whilst receiving treatment at the Holistic Medicare Hospital bring the death toll to seventeen (17) persons.
He added the police have taken steps to clear the debris and also trace both suspect drivers to assist police in investigation.
Meanwhile, bodies of the deceased persons have been conveyed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital Morgue for preservation awaiting identification and autopsy.
