The age-long perennial water crisis in the Gonja traditional area in the Savannah region is becoming a thing of the past as President Nana Akufo-Addo continues to provide potable drinking water for the people.

The President on Monday (12 July, 2021) commissioned the Salaga Water Expansion Project at Kpembe in the East Gonja municipality as part his two-day working tour of the Savannah region.

This milestone achievement was a promised made to the Paramount Chief of Kpembe, Kpembewura Babanye Haruna Bismark in 2017, meaning Nana Akufo-Addo has once again scored another political point over John Dramani Mahama, his main contender, who hails from the Savannah region.

The Salaga Water Supply System has undergone massive upgrading and rehabilitation works through the Urban Water Supply initiative to enhance its efficiency in order to provide constant water supply to the various households.    

Residents of Salaga and its surrounding communities will now enjoy at least, 85,000 gallons daily water supply following the completion of the project.   

The first term of the Akufo-Addo administration also witness the inauguration of the Yapei Small Towns Water Supply System to provide portable drinking to about 18,149 inhabitants in the Central Gonja district and its environs at a cost GHS5.66million.

Additionally, Nana Akufo-Addo prior to the 2020 general elections also cut sod for the construction of the Damongo Water Project with a credit facility of $45million dollars from the UK Export Finance and Deutsche Bank AG to end the age old water crisis in the area.

Beginning his two-day working tour of the Savannah Region, Sunday (11 July, 2021) President Akufo-Addo assured the Overlord of the Gonja traditional kingdom, Yagbonwura Tuntumba Boresa I, that the project will begin in August 2021.

He said the delay in the commencement of the project is due to the ravaging coronavirus pandemic.

He later opened the newly constructed 85-bed Central Gonja district multifaceted hospital in Buipe to improve the health needs of the people and serve commuters on the Tamale-Techiman-Kumasi highway.

The Yagbonwura, Tuntumba Boresa Sulemana I during a meeting with Nana Akufo-Addo on Sunday thanked him for the creation of the Savannah region.

According to the Overlord of the Gonja traditional kingdom, the creation of the region has brought peace, propelling development, strong human cohesion and job creation.

He, thus, thanked the President for the ongoing infrastructure development spearheaded by the Akufo-Addo led NPP administration.

“Mr. President, no words of inscription, joy and happiness can demonstrate our appreciation to you for the singular honour of creating the Savannah region, we will always remember you” the Yagbonwura said in his statement, and further commended the President for the establishment of 155 Armored Regiment headquarters in Damongo, the regional capital.

In his address, President Akufo-Addo thanked the Chiefs and people of the Savannah region for throwing their weight behind him and the governing New Patriotic Party in the 2020 general elections resulting in the party securing a historic three parliamentary seats.
