Bread makers in the northern regional capital, Tamale, would embark on an industrial action from Tuesday (24 August, 2021) following the continuous increase of prices for flour, sugar and other materials used for bread production.
Madam Meliga, a member of the Northern Region Association of Bread makers’ and owner of YESU ADOM BAKERY said the association at a crunch meeting on Monday took a decision to ceased production from now till Friday, adding, “So when we come back we come out with our new prices and that’s what we discussed at our meeting”.
She explained that, the price of flour now sells at GHS235 and same price goes for a bag of sugar in the open market.
She said in spite of the astronomical increase prices for flour and sugar, members of the association have not increase the price of bread, explaining that, “I think since the price of flour was GHS165 or GHS170, we’ve never increase our bread – the same way we have been cutting it up until now”.
However, she noted the public always complain about the size when they reduce the quantity for a loaf of bread.
“You can imagine – margarine has increased, sugar has increased; nut milk you can buy, everything has increased and in less than every two weeks they continue to increase prices” she lamented.
