The Northern Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Timothy Yoosa Bonga has rendered an unqualified apology to the families and individuals of last Monday police brutalities at Nakpanzoo, Nimafong and other parts of Tamale during an operation by the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo/VRA) to arrest persons involved in illegal connection.
COP Bonga said the four officers who have now been interdicted breached their mandate to maintain law and order and protect lives and properties in the country and emphasized that, “So if they have done this against our own ethics, there is the need to comeback to express our sympathies to them (victims) and that is why we are here.”
He noted the police administration has taken steps to investigate the matter and assured the investigations would be comprehensive to enable the police administration take the necessary actions.
The police hierarchy in a statement announced the interdiction of four personnel of the service who are seen in separate viral videos assaulting some inhabitants in Tamale for allegedly stealing electricity.
Nevertheless, the Regional Commander said the development should not compromise the existing cordiality between the general public and the police service in the region.
“It is something that has happened and we are working on it and that is why we are here to correct and build the relationship with the community. The community is our friend; they need us, we need them. It is because of them that we are here, we’re here to serve them” he added.
COP Yoosa Bonga further explained the action to interdict the embattled officers is to allow the conduct of proper investigations to give information to the police administration for the next line of actions.
“So their interdiction is just the first step and the investigation will continue, come out and now everybody and the administration will know what actually happened on the ground and now know what to do with the personnel”
