The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya Naa Abukari II has urged the management of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) of the Volta River Authority to consider the economic and social impact of their services on residents and resume work as soon as possible.
He stated that the devastating economic consequences of the NEDCo staff withdrawing their services should not be lost on them.
He has therefore appealed to them to resume work to alleviate the suffering of the people and destruction of their economic activities.
The Senior Staff Association of the NEDCo branch of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) last week announced the suspension of some of their activities in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale, citing anonymous death threats on their lives and properties of the company.
A section of the youth in Tamale is at loggerheads with the power distribution company and the Ghana Police Service in recent weeks after personnel of the police service manhandled some residents during a routine power theft operation in the metropolis.
The angry youth, in protest, attacked and destroyed the offices of NEDCo and the Lamashegu Divisional Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service.
However, the Ya Naa in a statement advised the youth to restrain themselves and desist from any action that would further disturb the existing peace in the Tamale metropolis and held discussion with the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC).
The Dagbon King also warned those engaged in power theft in the area to stop the illegality for the betterment of the country’s economic life.
Meanwhile, Ya Abukari II has commended personnel of the Ghana Police Service for ensuring peace and security prevail in the region and gave an assurance that he will as a matter of urgency improve the relationship between the youth and the police administration.
He, however, urged the security services to stop the arrest of the youth while he takes steps to amicably address the impasse.
