The youth of Lamashegu, a suburb of the Tamale metropolis Sunday afternoon, (February 13, 2022) clashed with personnel of the Ghana Police Service. The skirmish happened after a patrol team of police officers chased an unregistered salon car to the Lamashe Naa Palace and allegedly shot the driver of the vehicle.
The other occupants of the vehicle according to eyewitness account had to bolt for their lives amidst the indiscriminate firing of warning shots by the police when they arrived at the Chief palace.
This angered the youth to mobilise and allegedly attack the Lamashegu Divisional Command.
The Tamale police in recent weeks have carried out series of operations in Tamale to apprehend unregistered and unlicensed vehicles.
THE CUSTODIAN has learned that the police were on their usual routine checks in the regional capital. However, this is not the first in recent times the youth in Tamale have clashed with the police as a result of excesses in their line of duty.
THE CUSTODIAN can report at least one person, a teenager, who was hit by a stray bullet during the scuffle has died. Several others sustained gunshot wounds and various degrees of injuries.
One of the victims was badly hit by a bullet in the mouth but was quickly rushed to a private clinic where he was referred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
In different viral videos, armed men in uniform are seen firing in the air whereas a section of the community particularly the youth are also seen pelting stone at the officers.
