The Savannah Region Women’s Organizer of the New Patriotic Party, Hajia Safia Mohammed, has commended the NPP Members of Parliament for being firm and tactful in the passage of the much talked about Electronic Transactions Levy (E-levy).
She underscored the importance of such innovative ways of revenue generation for a developing nation such as Ghana and maintained it would accelerate the growth and wellbeing of the populace.
She therefore lauded the Economic Management Team of the Akufo-Addo administration led by Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for their vision that borne the e-levy.
“Once again the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has proven it dynamism and versatility in the forward match of our beloved country through the approval of the Electronic Transaction Levy Bill (E-Levy bill)” she noted.
According to her, the debate and counter debate on the floor of Parliament and among the citizenry have further deepened “our well cherished democratic dispensation as a country portrayed as a beacon of democracy in the African sub region.”
Hajia Safia observed citizens who are ill advised are mostly reluctant to honour their tax obligations or putatively abhor the idea of taxation. However, she noted it one strategic way for nation to develop and meet the needs and aspirations of its people.
“Advanced countries like the USA, UK, Australia, Singapore and China advertently rely on taxes to develop their countries to the admiration of majority of developing countries like ours. However what we failed to do is to emulate their sense of patriotism to honour our tax obligations as well as embrace innovative taxation that will help propel the development of our country for a prosperous future” she indicated.
The NPP Women Organizer therefore believes the passage of the electronic transactions levy is a milestone achievement and would widen the tax base of Ghana and help in the transform and stabilized the Ghanaian economy and boost investor confidence in the country.
Politicization of E-levy
Hajia Safia Mohammed on the other hand chided the opposition minority MPs for doing politics and propaganda with the E-levy policy.
“For the politicization of the Electronic Transaction Levy Bill, we cannot take it away from our opponents, it’s in their DNA. They have since time in memorial absolutely opposed most government pro-poor policies and programmes that sort to ameliorate the hardships of the Ghanaian citizen” she intimated.
She added, “The only thing they have since failed to oppose is the double salaries of their MPs”.
The Women Organizer however gave the assurance that the New Patriotic Party will in any day take into consideration the interest and concerns of the Ghanaian citizenry in any policy and programme to be rolled out.
