THE CUSTODIAN has been reliably informed that the New Patriotic Party Yendi constituency executives’ election has been suspended due to a Presidential intervention on the eleventh hour. The matter has also been referred to the National Steering Committee for further deliberations and the way forward, a source closer to the corridors of power has confirmed.
There has been a deadlock between the NPP Yendi Constituency Chairman and the Member of Parliament for the area over the compilation of the delegations album for the polls. This has brought agitations within the party in recent weeks.
Nonetheless, the NPP Regional leadership earlier this week in a statement announced the conduct of the elections in seventeen constituencies which included Yendi to be held on Thursday, April 28, 2022.
But, our source told us a complaint was laid to the seat of government which proved futile and consequently resulted in the suspension of the polls.
“My understanding is that it has been filed with the steering committee of the party and once the steering committee is supposedly sitting on the matter, it’s like the case is in court and you cannot proceed with the election. So, at the party’s level, it’s like an injunction, so that’s where we’re now” the source explained.
The source continued, “The Savelugu case is also with the same steering committee for determination and the directive is that they have to hold on but the question is, for how long are they going to be waiting? There is a Regional elections coming up and we cannot have two constituencies outstanding out of 18, because should any candidate win the contender with a margin less than the two constituencies 17 votes put together which is 34, the person can challenge the outcome.”
The source however indicated, “When the General and Co met with the President, the resolution was that, names that were expunged from the album [Yendi], the constituency chairman should be allowed to replace 50 of his preferred people. But, the names compiled at the newly created polling stations should be maintained.”
THE CUSTODIAN has further gathered that the Yendi elections would be conducted this forthcoming Sunday.
