Ako-Gun and Abass Nurudeen

Drama unfolded at the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) regional office in Kumasi where the vetting of aspirants for regional executive positions was taking place.

It all started when Ashanti Regional Communication Officer Abass Nurudeen who is seeking re-election accused the party’s National Deputy Communication officer, Godwin Ako-Gun of scheming to give the number one position on the ballot to the Regional Deputy communication officer, Alex Kweku Asafo Agyei.

Asafo Agyei who is in a fierce contest with the incumbent for the regional communication officer was said to be the best friend of Sammy Gyamfi and Abass Nurudeen.

However, Asafo Agyei fell out with Sammy Gyamfi and Abass prior to 2020 general election.
It is rumored that Ako-Gun is not in the good books of Sammy Gyamfi and Abass Nurudeen because they think that Ako-Gun nags and gossips a lot about their dealings within the party.

It is with this prejudiced mentality that Abass Nurudeen upon seeing Ako-Gun as one of the national assignees to vetting committee concluded that the latter came purposely to make sure that Asafo get number one slot on the ballot ahead of upcoming regional election that will take place on 12th on November 2024.

Consequently, argument ensued between Abass and Ako-Gun, degenerating to the extent that it took the intervention of Baba Jamal and Sylvester Mensah to restore calm.

Eventually, the vetting Committee apparently awarded Nurudeen Abass number one position on the ballot without undergoing balloting process so that peace will prevail.

The antagonism between Asafo Agyei and Abass Nurudeen on one hand and Sammy Gyamfi and Ako-Gun on the other is so endemic to the extent that another aspirant from Savannah region is brought in to contest as Deputy National communication officer just to remove Ako-Gun as deputy communications officer.

According to sources closed to Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC national communications officer was backing Alhaji Naziru to uproot Ako-Gun but later change his mind to Bring Maleek Basiltale after realizing that Alhaji Naziru was cash-strapped.

Information gathered indicates that Sammy is marshaling resources to support Abass Nurudeen to defeat Asafo Agyei convincingly.
Plans are for advanced, according to leaks received by thecustodianghonline.com, about 800 delegates would be given 300 cedis each on the Election Day on behalf of Abass.

It is further gleaned that one business man whom Abass sent his budget to disclosed that the incumbent Ashanti regional communications officer said he needed not less 400,000 Ghana cedis on the Election Day to defeat Asafo Agyei.
