Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has vowed to protect his enviable integrity, which he has built in both private and exemplary public life over the years.
He has accordingly served notice that he will not allow unscrupulous individuals to use his name for corrupt activities because his integrity is his most cherished asset in life.
“My most cherished asset in life is my integrity and I will not allow anyone to use my name to engage in corrupt activities”, the Vice President reiterated.
Dr. Bawumia gave the warning on Monday, following allegations by Anas Aremeyaw Anas that a Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Charles Adu Boahen, had used the Vice President’s name to solicit for $200,000 from investors, in order for he (Adu Boahen) to facilitate a meeting with the Vice President.
The Vice President in a post on Facebook stated he was not aware of any such dealing by the Minister.
Dr. Bawumia described the position of the Minister of State as untenable, following the revelation, and called for the dismissal and investigation of the Minister of State.
Shortly after the Vice President’s post, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo through the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Mr. Eugene Arhin announced the termination of the appointment of Charles Adu Boahen.
President Akufo-Addo also referred the conduct to the Office Special Prosecutor (OSP) for further action.
In his statement, Dr. Bawumia said, “My attention has been drawn to a video by Anas Aremeyaw Anas (as posted on his social media handle) showing the Minister of State for Finance, Mr. Charles Adu Boahen, apparently using my name, inter alia, to peddle influence and collect money from supposed investors.
“I would like to state that if what the minister is alleged to have said is accurately captured in the video, then his position as a minister of state is untenable. He should be dismissed summarily and investigated.
“I am not aware of any such meeting held by Minister Adu Boahen or a supposed “appearance fee.
“My most cherished asset in life is my integrity and I will not allow anyone to use my name to engage in corrupt activities”.
Bawumia’s integrity cannot be swayed by money- Gideon Boako
Meanwhile, investigative Journalist Anas Aremeyao Anas has reported how spokesperson to Vice President Bawumia told his investigative team how decent and principled Vice President Bawumia is.
In a teaser of his investigation documentary on his Facebook page, Anas revealed how a Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Charles Adu Boahen peddled influence and used the Vice President’s name to demand $200,000 Dollars for the Vice President, in order to arrange for an investor to meet with the Vice President.
Anas and his investigators posed as businessmen in Dubai desiring to set up a business in Ghana, and Charles assured he could arrange for them to meet the Vice President.
When asked by the ‘businessmen’ what it would take to meet the Vice President, Charles Adu Boahen, according to Anas, said if they made $200,000 available for the Vice President, he would be able to arrange the meeting.
“You mean, like appearance fees and stuff? I mean he, himself (the Vice President), if you give him some (USD) 200,000 or something as a token, as thank you, appreciation, that’s fine. He’s not really, he’s not really (like) that. All he needs is to worry about his campaign money in 2020,” Anas quoted Charles Adu Boahen as saying.
However, Anas also reported that the spokesperson to the Vice President, Dr. Gideon Boako, told them there has been no instance where the Vice President has asked for money before meeting an investor.
“So, on top of my head and having been with him closely, I will say no. I know how discreet he, the Vice President, is and he is smart and he wouldn’t even dare do such a thing”, Anas quoted Dr. Gideon Boako as saying.
Charles Adu Boahen has come under fire on social media following the release of the teaser by Anas and airing of the documentary at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).
