The Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa South, Mr. Samuel Atta Akyea has launched the Abuakwa south disaster relief fund to provide financial assistance to residents in communities within the constituency who were affected by a flooding disaster in September.
The torrential rains on Monday, 5th September 2022 claimed the lives of at least five persons and left hundreds displaced.
The disaster fund will be managed by a committee comprising the MP for Abuakwa South, the Abuakwa South Municipal Chief Executive, Ms. Akosua Asabea Annoh and the acting Vice Principal of Kibi Presbyterian College of Education Rev. Ernest Som Koranteng.
The fund was created with Stanbic bank with account name “Abuakwa south disaster relief fund”. Speaking at the launch, Mr. Atta Akyea said the initiative will mitigate the plight of the affected persons who have since been subjected to various economic hardships.
“The effect of the rain was so terrible that even people in the subriso electoral area, those in Kyebi and even the Presbyterian college of education were hit by the torrential rain. The spill off was just massive flooding.
“I have to commend the Municipal Chief Executive Hon Akosua Asabea Annoh who was gracious enough to bring in NADMO (National Disaster Management Organisation) to immediately provide some reliefs to the flood victims. It is obvious that NADMO is to serve the whole country and so whatever resource they will provide to the victims is not enough. And so we decided to put our heads together and create the Abuakwa south disaster relief fund and solicit help from corporate bodies and individuals”, Mr. Atta Akyea explained.
The MP also attributed the devastating effect of the rains to the prevalence of galamsey activities in the area.
“Because of an appetite for profit, how people are audacious enough to do galamsey in a sacred river (Birim), I dont understand but they should stop because now we are red alert and those who continue on that path will be prosecuted”, the Abuakwa South lawmaker warned.
The Municipal Chief Executive Akosua Asabea Annoh said the assembly plans to migrate residents from lowland and valley areas in the municipality to highland areas as a way of preventing future flood disasters.
“There are communities that we will really need to resettle them because where they live is in a valley and we have to take them to higher grounds. So this funding will come in very handy to undertake all these projects”, she added.
