The Member of Parliament for Savelugu constituency in the northern region, Alhaji Iddrisu Abdulai Jacob, has been accused of charging members of four communities in his constituency an amount of one hundred Ghana cedis (GHS100) for him to construct a dam for them.
According to the Savelugu NPP Communications Director, Abukari Gafaru, the lawmaker realized a total amount of GHS11,500 from the contribution made from the four villages.
He named the communities as follows: Yong, Damdu, Chaalam, and Nyetua all in the Savelugu municipality.
“He realized one hundred and fifteen million old Ghana cedis from these Villages and as we speak the dam is yet to be constructed. No site for the dam and the communities has been chasing him for their monies, this willfully absconded with the money and this is the kind of MP that have been given to the people of Savelugu” he alleged.
He continued, “One day we were at Might FM, this matter came up, and their (NDC) Communication Officer, Mr. Ibrahim called into the radio program and confirmed he took the monies and gave it to their MP.”
Mr. Gafaru indicated the Savelugu legislator has been declared wanted in the affected communities and he cannot visit those areas.
Meanwhile, efforts made by THE CUSTODIAN Online to reach the Member of Parliament to comment on the matter haven’t been successful.
Nonetheless, the Savelugu NDC deputy Communications Officer, Issah Ibrahim Adam has refuted the allegations stating the MP did not ask the people to contribute money but rather it was the sole decision of the people to contribute the money to support the dam construction.
“The truth of the matter is that we don’t have drinking water in the four communities, the only dam in the area was built for us during the construction of the highway but it isn’t enough for us. I went round as unit committee member and assembled the people at Yong Chief Palace and we agreed to appeal to the MP to help us in that regard.
“We [members of the four] reflected that the MP cannot do the work without our support, at least we should do something, so that we provide food for the workers then every household was asked to contribute GHS100 to support” he explained.
When asked whether the dam has been constructed, Mr. Ibrahim Adam told THE CUSTODIAN it hasn’t been done yet, saying “the MP brought the machines last year but it rained heavily during the period and they had move the equipment away.”
