Some Youth Groups in the Dagbon traditional area have made passionate appeal to President Nana Akufo-Addo to consider appointing Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Awal as the next Minister for Trade and Industry.

This comes in the wake of the resignation of the sector Minister, Mr. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, to pursue his presidential ambition.

Dr Awal currently serves in government as the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture since the assumption of office of President Nana Akufo-Addo for his second term.

The youth have argued that the successful businessman and ace Journalist is the best candidate for the trade ministry especially at this critical moment the industries sector has become vital and central to rebuilding the country’s economy in the post Covid-19 recovery programme.

The Northern Regional Correspondent of THE CUSTODIAN, Mohammed Gadafi, reports that many people in the area have absolute confidence in their kinsman who served as Business Development Minister in the first Akufo-Addo led administration.

Mahama Osman, a leading member of a group known as Dagbon Peace for Development said Dr Awal has carried himself since he joined the mainstream politics of the NPP and has also been very helpful and supportive to the Chiefs and people of the region.

“In my candid view, Mr. Awal can best be described as the savior to the youth of northern region, I remember several times he came interact with us and ask us to come out with business ideas so that he will support us to go into entrepreneurship – the man has brilliant ideas that can grow Ghana.”  

He intimated further, “If you ask many of our Chiefs they will tell you how the man has been supporting them, give people permanent employment opportunities, scholarships to study, count it.”

Profile of Dr Awal

Education:

Ibrahim Awal attended Ghana Senior High School in the Northern Region of Ghana before proceeding to the Ghana Institute of Journalism in Accra. He holds a Masters in Applied Business Research from the Swiss Business SchoolSwitzerland, and an Executive Masters in Business Administration from the University of Ghana Business SchoolLegon.

He obtained a master’s degree in International Journalism from the University of WalesUnited Kingdom. As of January 2017, he was pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration at the Swiss Business School.

Work Experience:

On 12 January 2017, Mohammed Awal was nominated by President Akuffo-Addo for the position of Minister for Business Development. The ministry was a new ministry and is to formulate policies and facilitate the work of Ghana’s private sector.

His appointment was hailed by the Ghana Union of Traders, the Association of Ghana Industries and the general business community in the country with most wondering why it had not been established earlier under previous governments.

Hundreds of thousands business starters were given both technical skills and capacity building training and financial support many of whom have become successful and are employing Ghanaians.
