The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has extended its heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the late Alhaji Mohammed Nuru-Deen Jawula and the good people of the Kpembe Traditional Area, the football community, and to the rest of the nation.
A statement issued by the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong said the passing of Alhaji Jawula is a great loss to this country and the NPP in particular.
The former Ghana Football Association (GFA) boss died at age 73.
“The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has received with sadness, the news of the passing of Alhaji Mohammed Nuru-Deen Jawula, which occurred on Saturday, January 21, 2023”, the statement reiterated.
It said until his demise, the late Alhaji Jawula was a long-standing and staunch member of the NPP.
“He was shortlisted for the running mate of the party ahead of the 2008 General Elections, at which time, he expressed his readiness to relinquish his traditional authority in order to serve the NPP and the Republic in that capacity.
“Alhaji Jawula, as he was affectionately called, also served as Chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) from 1997 to 2001, and remained the Chairman of the Ghana League Organizing Committee until his death.
“He founded the Guan United, a Division One Club in Ghana, and held several other influential positions in the Real Tamale United Football Club.
“The Late traditional ruler of the Kpembe traditional area in the Savanna Region, Lepowura Alhaji Mohammed Nurudeen-Deen Jawula, also proved himself a distinguished Statesman, having served in the Civil and Public Services for over thirty years. He rose through the ranks and headed various directorates at the Ministries of Health, Finance, as well as Harbours and Railways.
“May Almighty Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) strengthen his family in this challenging period. And may He grant his gentle soul Jannatul Firdaus”, the statement concluded.
Background
Jawula was a son of the Kpembiwura Jawula Ababio, a former CPP party chairman and the only child of his mother.
He attended the University of Cape Coast where he read English and Economics for his first degree.
Alhaji Jawula also held Master’s degrees from the University of Ghana, Legon in African Literature and Social Policy.
He worked with the civil service for 32 years, starting as assistant division officer and ending up as the Chief Director of the Ministry of Health.
Alhaji Jawula also worked at the Ministry of Finance as well as Ministry of Harbours and Railways.
He was the DCE for Walewale and Gambaga from 1979 to 1980.
At the football level, he was a chairman of the Real Tamale United Management Committee and owned his own football club; Guan United.
