The Deputy General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party, Mr. Haruna Mohammed, who is Chairman of the Savelugu Constituency Elections Committee has promised to conduct a transparent, free and fair polls. The NPP is expected to hold its constituency executive elections on Saturday, April 29, 2023, to select new officers who will steer affairs of the party.
The election was put on hold by the National Council of the NPP following the 2020 parliamentary elections petition filed at the Tamale High Court by its candidate, Muhamed Abdul Samed Gunu, who was then the incumbent MP for the area.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, the NPP Deputy General Secretary said the party decided to conduct the polls upon the final determination of the petition by the court.
He disclosed 43 prospective candidates at the opening nomination picked forms and filed to contest the elections in order to serve the NPP.
“…Vetting was conducted from the Chairman to the last position which is the Nasara Coordinator, the vetting was very successful. We had one petition and the petition was heard – it took us two hours to hear that petition. We decided as a committee that the petition did not meet the required standard to disqualify the person who was petitioned against” he explained.
THE CUSTODIAN has learnt the petitioners wanted one of the Organizer Aspirants, Abdulai Abass, disqualified from contesting the elections alleging he is not a registered voter in the constituency.
However, Mr. Haruna said upon scrutinizing the 2020 register of the electoral commission, the committee found out that the aspirant was registered at the Savelugu Experimental primary school polling station.
The Chairman has also assured the elections committee will ensure transparent, free and fair elections to promote peace and unity in the party in the lead up to the 2024 general elections.
“I there together with the other members of the committee to make sure the Savelugu elections is free and fair” he emphasized. The NPP Deputy General has also directed members of the polling stations and electoral area coordinators elections committee to conclude the compilation of the delegates album without any further delays.
