A five-member panel of the Supreme Court has convicted Prof. Michael Kpessa-Whyte of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) after he pleaded guilty to three contempt of court charges levelled against him by the apex court.
The panel, which was chaired by Justice Mariama Owusu, had Justices Lovelace Johnson, Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, Samuel Asiedu, and George Kingsley Koomson as other members.
The charges, as read in court by the clerk, are scandalising the Supreme Court, ridiculing the Supreme Court, and prejudicing the highest court of the land.
Dr Justice Srem Sai, lawyer for Kpessa-Whyte, in mitigating on behalf of his client before sentencing, asked the Supreme Court to temper justice with mercy, promising that his client will never in his lifetime, commit such a blunder again.
Additionally, Dr Srem Sai noted that his client will commit himself to defending the integrity of the Supreme Court, the Justices of the Supreme Court, and that of the entire Judiciary.
The panel is yet to give its ruling.
