Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Friday received a heroic welcome at his hometown of Walewale in the North East Region.
Dr. Bawumia was in Walewale to attend very important social events but was surprised by a show of massive support as residents in thousands met him at the outskirts to usher him ‘home’
What would have taken less than 10 minutes to drive to the Walewale Township took close to an hour with motorbikes, tricycles and cars leading the convoy of the second gentleman into town.
The move was to demonstrate against claims the Vice President has lost the support of his kinsmen ahead of his official announcement to contest as flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
A fortnight night ago, there were reports suggesting 300 supporters of the Vice President from his home region have defected to join team Alan.
A certain Issah Amadu who is said to be a spokesperson of the group claims the show of support exhibited by NPP and Ghanaians during the ‘aduru wo’ so walk leaves them in no doubt that Alan is the right candidate that has what it takes to win the elections of 2024.
But in contrast to such claims, residents poured out in their numbers to affirm their support to the Vice President and also send a signal to those making propaganda that he was their choice.
“They were heard chanting; Next to lead, Best to Lead, Break the 8, the next President” among others as security details had a herculean task controlling the crowd.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyeremanten are considered frontrunners in the upcoming Presidential Primaries of the NPP with Dr Bawumia deemed to be ahead of Mr Kyeremanten.
Several others have declared their intention to contest, and are campaigning vigorously as Election Day nears.
