Hajia Fatahiya Abdul Aziz, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary candidate has filed her nomination forms to contest the Savelugu seat on December 7, 2024. The Member of Parliament hopeful was accompanied by the former NPP MP for the constituency, Hon Muhamed Abdul Samed Gunu, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon Ayishetu Seidu, and the constituency chairman among many other bigwigs of the party to submit the forms.
Hundreds of NPP supporters in the constituency turned out massively on Monday (September 9, 2024) to witness the filing process amidst drumming and dancing. Madam Fatahiya is the second NPP female parliamentary candidate in the 18 constituencies in the northern region to run for the parliamentary election in the upcoming general elections.
The candidate moved her entourage after successfully filing the nomination to pay a courtesy call on the paramount Chief of Savelugu, Yoo Naa Abdulai Yakubu Andani, to formally inform him and solicit his blessings as the campaign for the seat intensifies.
The Yoo Naa in his remarks cautioned the major political actors to desist from the use of intemperate language during the campaigning period. He added politicians must be circumspect and choose their words carefully.
The traditional leader noted that the Savelugu municipal lags behind in terms of development among its peers.
“Therefore, we want an MP who can and bring the needed development projects that would go a long way to mitigate the people’s impoverishment. I want to urge all political parties to tone down and remember that the focus is the development of the constituency and how to provide better livelihoods for the people” he stated.
The Yoo also expressed confidence in women leadership and further commended Hajia Fatahiya Abdul Aziz for stepping up to contest the parliamentary seat.
He also acknowledged some of the infrastructure projects and poverty alleviating programs the NPP candidate has introduced to ameliorate the suffering of the people especially women and the youth in the area.
Addressing part supporters, Hon Samed Gunu, the former Savelugu Member of Parliament said the Akufo-Addo government has brought some major infrastructure development like the Savelugu rice processing factory under the flagship One District, One Factory initiative, Agenda 111 hospital, the Digital Solutions Center in the constituency. He stated the impact the free senior high school policy in the constituency cannot be overemphasized.
He further charged all supporters to go into communities and households to campaign vigorously for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to become President and Hajia Fatahiya Aziz winning the seat for the party.
The Savelugu Municipal Chief Executive, Ayishetu Seidu, for her part called for peace and unity in the party and further admonished to reach out to disgruntled NPP members to participate in the electoral process and vote massively for the party’s presidential and parliamentary candidates on December 7.
She highlighted the monumental work done by the parliamentary candidate to give a facelift to all feeder roads in the constituency to boost economic activities.
The NPP 2024 Parliamentary candidate for her part thanked all party members from the polling stations, electoral areas and constituency for the massive support. She announced the former MP, Abdul Samed Gunu, is the lead campaigner and charged every rally behind the party to recapture the seat and ensure the Vice President wins the presidential election to succeed President Nana Akufo-Addo.
“…The campaign is just getting started and we have to work more than we’ve been doing before today. We need everyone to be involved in the campaign to take the seat from the nonperforming MP. He cannot do anything to bring development to the constituency” Hajia Fatahiya emphasized.
