The Northern Regional Executives of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the regional Command of the Ghana Police Service to arrest a Regional Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Gbewaa, for allegedly assaulting the NDC Regional Treasurer, Hajia Shamima Yakubu.

The New Patriotic Party has also urged the police service to as a matter of urgency investigate the matter and prosecute the perpetrator and all those found to have participated in the physical attack of the female politician.

The governing party further condemned political violence in all forms and noted the sad situation of the NDC here in the Northern Region reflects the defective state of the party at all levels and admonished Ghanaians not to vote for them in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

The Northern Regional Communications Director of the NPP, Mr. Yussif Danjuma in a statement issued on Sunday, January 14, 2024, said the party has noted with serious concern recent developments in the camp of the largest opposition party in the country.

“These concerns are emanated within two factions that existed within the camp of NDC, one faction belonging to Member of Parliament for Tamale South constituency, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, believes that former president H.E John Dramani Mahama is not credible candidate to compute with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party and the current Vice-President of the Republic of Ghana.”

He added, “The other camp hold view that Haruna Iddrisu hates the former president to become the president again because of their personal interest. This ordinary should not be a matter of the concern to the NPP.”

However, the NPP Communications Director indicated the open confrontations characterized by violent skirmishes with heavy blows will certainly be a matter of interest to every likeminded persons especially so when the Tamale Metropolis and the Northern Region has enjoyed relative peace and coexistence for some time now.

He recounted last week, “We witness the turning of the Global Dream Hotel into a scene similar to what we are seeing between Vice Chairman and women Organiser.”

“Even though the NDC is noted in our political history to always resolve its internal disagreements with violence, one would have expected that Ghana’s democratic evolution and consolidation has transcend beyond such sub-culture of violence and acrimony” he stressed.
