The King of the Dagbon traditional kingdom, Ndan Yaa Naa Abukari II, has commended the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) for playing a vital role in promoting understanding and unity in the northern region.
He also lauded all journalists in the region for instrumentally amplifying the voices of the underserved communities and shedding light on the significant events to enhance the socioeconomic livelihood of the people.
“I have always wanted to meet you and express my gratitude and appreciation for your commitment to covering the events within our beloved Dagbon kingdom, from the solemn observances of the funerals of our revered late Kings to the celebrations of my enskinment as Yaa Naa. All these great efforts to spread the word as it is has not gone unnoticed, especially by me” the Yaa Naa stated.
The Dagbon Overlord made these remarks when the Northern Regional Executives of the GJA paid a courtesy call on him today Thursday, February 22, 2024, at the Gbewaa Palace.
Yaa Naa Abukari II added, “Your efforts in promoting peace, reconciliation and harmony through your reporting are commendable and essential in maintaining the fragile peace that we cherish in Dagbon.”
Notwithstanding the applause, the Dagbon King seized the opportunity to remind the GJA and all journalists in the country of responsible journalism.
He observed sensational headlines that stray from the true essence of the reports can inadvertently sow discord and misunderstanding among the populace.
Therefore, he admonished the media to continue to uphold the ethics of the profession which enjoins reporters to impartial, accurate and fair.
He emphasised the media must always ensure that their stories reflect the true essence and context of the events.
Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Chairman of the GJA, Yakubu Abdul Majeed, in his remarks explained the purpose of the visit was to introduce the newly elected regional executives to the Dagbon Overlord and seek his blessings and protection ahead of this year’s general elections.
He said the GJA remains committed and determined to promote the existing peace in the Dagbon kingdom and the region as a whole.
He further embraced the advice of the Yaa Naa and called colleague journalists across the region to be circumspect, impartial and objective in their reportage.
He said journalists must shy away from self seeking individuals who would want to use them as agents to foment chaos and anarchy in the society especially as the electioneering campaigns intensifies ahead of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary polls.
