The Savelugu Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Alhaji Alhassan Saani, has responded to the constituency executives of the opposition National Democratic Congress for threatening mayhem prior to the commencement of the nationwide mass voter registration exercise by the electoral commission.
The NDC held a press conference addressed by the Communications Officer, Nyaba Abass Abdul Rahaman and accused the NPP of attempting to bus people from Tamale to register them in the Savelugu constituency in order to vote in the December general elections.
He alleged the governing party is also planning to transfer voters from the Tamale Central and Tamale South constituencies all in the effort to ensure the NPP’s parliamentary candidate; Hajia Fatahiya Abdul Aziz wins the Savelugu seat.
He consequently implored the electoral commission, Ghana Police Service, National Intelligence Bureau and the paramount Chief of Savelugu, Yoo Naa Andani Yakubu Abdulai (V) to immediately intervene; adding parents who allow their children to be used by the NPP will laugh at the wrong sides of their mouths.
Mr. Abass Abdul Rahaman stated: “We shall resist fearless and will respond appropriate to the NPP by matching them not only booth for booth by shoulder to shoulder and slap to slap in their self-seeking attempt to perpetuate any illegality so that we will have been able to strongly restore the dignity and sanctity of our electoral system.”
The NPP Chairman in a media interview on Wednesday, (May 8, 2024) vehemently denied all the claims of the NDC and described it as baseless. He however indicated the opposition party cannot stop any applicant from registering so long as they meet the constitutional requirement of 18 years and above.
“The press conference was their constitutional right and we in the NPP are ready to foment any trouble but I advise my brothers in the NDC to bring down the ball for us to play. Even if we were in opposition the NDC couldn’t have scared us and not even while we are in government” he stated.
He said that the NPP Parliamentary candidate, Hajia Fatahiya Abdul Aziz, has brought so much infrastructure development to the people of Savelugu and expressed confidence that the people will vote massively for her on December 7, 2024.
“…So the people know why they are registering to vote for Hajia Fatahiya and she doesn’t need to bring anyone from anywhere to vote in Savelugu” he emphasized.
The chairman together with other constituency executives accompanied Hajia Fatahiya Aziz to monitor the registration exercise at the Savelugu municipal office. She interacted with both EC officials and the registrants and assured them of her support throughout the exercise.
Meanwhile, the electoral commission at the end of first and second days registered 108 and 95 applicants respectively.
THE CUSTODIAN observed that the registration process in the Savelugu constituency was also characterized network challenges.
