The Minister for the Interior has announced a postponement of the nationwide recruitment exercise for the internal security services, thus Police, Prisons, and Immigration, following last Wednesday’s stampede at the El Wak Sports Stadium during a similar military recruitment event.

The exercise, which was originally scheduled to begin on Saturday, November 15, will now commence on Monday, November 17.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, November 14, 2025, the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, said the decision to postpone the recruitment of the youth into Police, Prisons and other security agencies was taken in response to the tragic incident at El Wak and to ensure better crowd management and safety in the upcoming processes.

He noted that recruitment for the Police Service, Immigration Service, and Prisons Service will resume on Monday, with a revised timetable to be published in the national dailies, on official social media platforms, and through the relevant ministries and agencies.

The stampede at the recruitment centre led to more than 30 people sustaining injuries, with five of them in critical condition at the 37 Military Hospital.

The tragedy has sparked widespread grief and provoked urgent calls for accountability and reforms in the recruitment process.

In response, the acting Minister of Defence, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced that an internal investigation has begun to determine the causes of the stampede.

In a statement signed by Colonel Evelyn Ntiamoah Asamoah, Acting Director General of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces. The military explained that the extension was necessary to accommodate applicants who had experienced difficulties during the initial phase.

“The Ghana Armed Forces has extended the deadline for the ongoing recruitment exercise by one week due to some technical challenges encountered on the recruitment portal during the initial period,” the statement read.
