The 5th edition of the Northern Regional Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) awards has formally been launched in Tamale on Tuesday (October 14, 2025).
This year’s awards scheme would be held on the theme: “Bridging the Rural-Urban Education Gap: The Role of the Media”, highlighting the critical role journalists play in shaping the narrative on education.
The GJA Northern Regional Chairman, Mr. Yakubu Abdul Majeed, in his remarks underscored the critical role education plays in advancing growth and development in underserved communities.
He emphasized that education is the backbone of development, and bridging the gap between urban and rural areas particularly at the basic level, is imperative.
”As journalists, we assure that we will help to seek solutions to societal challenge as we will report and highlight them.
”This year’s Awards is part of our efforts to galvanize media practitioners to tackle pressing issues. We would be grateful if the Coordinating Director and Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service could partner with us” he appealed.
Welfare
The Chairman said the welfare of Journalists in the region remains a top-most priority to the leadership of the GJA, assuring they will continue to work assiduously to improve the working conditions of practitioners.
”To our colleagues, your welfare remains our top priority. We’ll continue to improve your working conditions and build your capacity through partnerships and training” he stated.
Meanwhile, Mr. Yakubu Abdul Majeed has commended the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), T-Tel, World Vision, ActionAid, Ghana Developing Communities Association, Children Believe, and Baobab Microfinance Company for coming on board to support the GJA in diverse ways.
The Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Ali Adolf, for his part lauded the GJA for putting the awards program together to acknowledge and recognize efforts hardworking Journalists in the region.
He noted the work of Journalists in promoting development and inspiring policy formulations to addressing developmental gaps in the society cannot be overstated.
The Minister emphasized that the media has the power to amplify the voices of individuals and communities who are often unheard to duty bearers for the needed interventions.
He further encouraged the media to continue to play their role diligently as watchdogs of the society.
Mr. Adolf also urged Journalists to report on the issues affecting quality teaching and learning in rural communities in order to mitigate the rural-urban educational gap in the country and also promote innovative solutions.
