The contest for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership took a decisive turn today as 63 Members of Parliament publicly declared their support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The MPs, forming a clear majority of the party’s 87 lawmakers, held a press conference to announce what they described as a united endorsement aimed at consolidating the party’s parliamentary caucus behind Dr. Bawumia. The development positions him as the clear frontrunner ahead of the January 2026 delegates’ congress.

While some critics dismissed the endorsement as numerically insignificant—given the NPP’s more than 200,000 delegates—party insiders argue it represents a powerful organizational advantage.

“An MP is not just one vote; they are the captain of a constituency team,” said Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, MP for Bantama. “When we declare for Dr. Bawumia, we speak for the hundreds of polling station executives and coordinators who take direction from us. This is the signal our base has been waiting for.”

The backing gives Dr. Bawumia a substantial strategic edge. Each MP brings with them an existing campaign structure—offices, logistics, funding, and loyal constituency operatives—capable of mobilizing support across the grassroots.

Equally significant is the national spread of the endorsing MPs, drawn from every region of Ghana. Analysts say this geographic diversity strengthens the perception of Dr. Bawumia as a unifying figure capable of appealing to the party’s base and the wider electorate alike.

Political observers note that in NPP history, candidates with strong parliamentary support have often translated that momentum into broader delegate victories.

The MPs’ endorsement, therefore, could create a powerful bandwagon effect—one that shapes perceptions of inevitability within the party’s rank and file.

As Dr. Stephen Domfeh put it after the press conference, “It’s misleading to see 63 MPs as just 63 votes. Each represents the networks, trust, and loyalty of an entire constituency. This is not a small ripple—it’s a nationwide wave of support consolidating behind Dr. Bawumia. The caucus has spoken, and the party is listening.”
