MTN Ghana has announced plans to connect every home in the country with high-speed fibre broadband as part of its Ambition 2030 strategy, while committing to deepen investment in digital infrastructure and intensify public education on the benefits of fixed internet connectivity.
The telecommunications company said the initiative forms part of a broader vision to transform Ghanaian homes into fully connected digital hubs capable of supporting remote work, online education, business operations, entertainment and smart home technologies.
Speaking at the MTN Bright Conversations media engagement, the company’s Chief Home Officer, Richard Acheampong, said MTN was implementing a US$1 billion investment programme in Ghana’s internet infrastructure to deliver reliable, high-capacity broadband services nationwide.
He said the investment demonstrated MTN’s confidence in Ghana’s economy and its long-term commitment to driving the country’s digital transformation.
“We are driving a one-billion-dollar project in Ghana’s internet infrastructure as our commitment to ensure smooth and high-speed connectivity,” he said.
Connect every home
Mr Acheampong said MTN’s ambition was to ensure that every household had access to reliable fixed broadband connectivity under the company’s Ambition 2030 agenda.
He explained that the COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally changed the way people lived and worked, proving that many economic, educational and social activities could successfully be conducted from home.
According to him, the experience reinforced the need for dependable home internet services capable of supporting the growing digital demands of households.
“The home has evolved beyond just a place to sleep. Today it is an office, a classroom, a cinema and a digital hub, making reliable internet connectivity more essential than ever,” he said.
Fibre broadband
Mr Acheampong described fibre broadband as the superior option for home internet, noting that it provides significantly larger data capacity than conventional mobile internet and can deliver speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second (1Gbps).
He explained that such speeds enable multiple users and connected devices to operate simultaneously without compromising performance, making fibre ideal for modern households.
According to him, stable fibre connectivity supports video conferencing, online learning, cloud-based business operations, smart home automation and uninterrupted streaming of digital content.
He added that unreliable internet connections often disrupt virtual meetings, online classes, digital transactions and entertainment services, affecting productivity and convenience.
Public education
Despite the growing demand for internet services, Mr Acheampong said many Ghanaians still underestimated the value of fixed broadband because of misconceptions about affordability and its long-term benefits.
He observed that many households continued to rely exclusively on mobile internet without fully appreciating the advantages of fibre broadband, particularly where several people or devices share the same connection.
“The conversation should not only be about price but about the value people derive from reliable internet connectivity,” he stressed.
He therefore called for intensified nationwide public education to improve understanding of the differences between mobile internet and fixed broadband services.
Mr Acheampong appealed to the media to partner MTN in educating consumers on the economic and social benefits of fibre connectivity, saying increased awareness would accelerate adoption across the country.
Digital transformation
Mr Acheampong said expanding fibre broadband access remained central to MTN’s Ambition 2030 strategy, which prioritises investment in digital infrastructure to ensure that Ghanaians have everyday access to reliable, high-capacity internet services.
According to him, broader adoption of fixed broadband will boost productivity, expand digital inclusion, improve access to education and business opportunities, and strengthen Ghana’s transition to a fully digital economy.
Mr Acheampong reaffirmed MTN Ghana’s commitment to providing innovative home connectivity solutions designed to meet the changing needs of Ghanaian households as digital technologies continue to reshape everyday life.
