Abanga Fuseini Yakubu has been elected National Youth Organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), defeating five other candidates in a six-way contest at the party’s national delegates conference in Kumasi.
Fuseini secured 1,550 votes in Saturday’s election held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, emerging as the clear winner in the contest to lead the party’s youth wing ahead of the 2028 general elections.
His closest challenger, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, polled 631 votes, while Michael Osei Boateng received 78 votes. Vera Oye Bram-Larbi secured 44 votes, former Deputy National Youth Organiser Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah obtained 46 votes, and Alfred Kumi Ababio polled 25 votes.
Fuseini’s victory means he will succeed Salam Mustapha as head of the NPP’s youth wing and assume responsibility for coordinating youth mobilisation and engagement across the party.
The election formed part of nine national executive contests held during the conference, which brought together more than 7,000 delegates from various regions and constituencies across Ghana.
The Electoral Commission supervised the elections, with voting conducted at 31 polling stations set up at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
During his campaign, Fuseini pledged to strengthen the NPP’s youth mobilisation structures and increase the participation of young people in the party’s activities. He also set an ambitious target of securing four million youth votes for the party’s 2028 presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia.
As the newly elected National Youth Organiser, Fuseini is expected to work closely with the new national executives and other party structures to broaden the NPP’s appeal among young voters.
His immediate task will be to build a stronger and more coordinated youth base as the NPP begins preparations to regain political power in the 2028 general elections.
