The High Court in Accra has admitted Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 pending trial.

Justice Bankole Thompson, who presided, admitted the accused to bail with two justified sureties.

As part of the conditions, Abronye DC is to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters once a fortnight, surrender his travelling documents to the court’s registry, and is restrained from travelling outside the jurisdiction without the court’s permission.

The motion for bail was moved by Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, led by Godfred Yeboah Dame, who prayed the court to admit the applicant to bail pending trial. The Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem-Sai, informed the court that the prosecution did not oppose the application.

Background

On May 13, the Accra Circuit Court remanded Abronye DC to Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) custody.

Prosecutors allege that the accused falsely published a video online containing derogatory remarks about a Circuit Court judge — claiming the judge was “always presiding over political cases” and that her rulings were “wrong and full of grammatical errors.”

He allegedly went further, stating: “You are not a judge but rather a politician who has covered your hair with a sack claiming you are a judge” — remarks the prosecution says were intended to incite the public against the court and the judge.

The alleged outburst followed a social media comment by a pastor about the Vice President, a matter currently before the courts.

Abronye DC faces one count of publication of false news and one count of offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace. An earlier bail application before the Circuit Court was refused.
