Ghana’s capital, Accra, has strengthened its reputation as one of the world’s leading entertainment destinations after ranking 18th on Time Out’s list of the World’s Best Cities for Nightlife.
The recognition places Accra among the top 20 nightlife cities globally and makes it one of only two African cities to feature on the prestigious list. South Africa’s Johannesburg ranked even higher at seventh.
Time Out’s annual nightlife ranking was compiled using responses from more than 24,000 city dwellers around the world, alongside assessments from the publication’s city editors, culture experts and nightlife specialists.
The cities were evaluated on several factors, including the quality and affordability of nightlife, music and entertainment, community, safety, diversity, excitement, and how welcoming the destinations are to visitors and residents.

According to the survey findings, Accra’s nightlife stands out for its strong sense of community and welcoming atmosphere.
About 75% of locals surveyed said it is easy to find genuine connection and community while enjoying the city after dark. This highlights the social nature of Accra’s nightlife, where music, food, parties and cultural experiences often bring people together.
The city also performed strongly in terms of friendliness. Sixty-five percent of residents described Accra’s nightlife culture as exceptionally friendly and approachable, reinforcing the capital’s reputation for hospitality.
Affordability was another major strength. About 62% of respondents rated going out at night in Accra as highly affordable, making the city an attractive destination for both residents and international visitors looking for entertainment without spending excessively.
Meanwhile, 56% of respondents gave top ratings to the quality of Accra’s events and music, reflecting the city’s growing influence on the global entertainment scene.
Osu remains a nightlife hub
Accra’s nightlife has traditionally been associated with areas such as Osu, which continues to attract locals, tourists and members of the diaspora.
Popular establishments including Bloom Bar, The Republic Bar & Grill and Purple Pub remain important parts of the city’s nightlife landscape.
However, Accra’s entertainment scene is no longer concentrated in one area. Neighbourhoods such as East Legon and Cantonments have emerged as major nightlife destinations, offering a growing selection of upscale clubs, lounges, restaurants and bars.
Venues such as MAD CLUB and Enzo Accra have contributed to the development of a more premium nightlife experience in these areas.
Music scene continues to evolve
Time Out also highlighted the changing nature of Accra’s music culture.
While the city remains strongly associated with Afrobeats, its nightlife is increasingly embracing alternative sounds and subcultures. Electronic music, alté and 1990s R&B-themed events are gaining popularity, adding greater diversity to the city’s after-dark entertainment.
This evolution has helped create a nightlife environment that appeals to different generations and musical tastes.
Accra’s 18th-place ranking therefore reflects more than its abundance of clubs and bars. It also recognises the city’s vibrant social culture, accessibility, hospitality, music scene and growing international appeal.
