The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has sued the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, over statements he describes as false and defamatory.
The Effutu MP announced the legal action when Parliament reconvened on Monday, August 24, 2026, following a public dispute between the two over the scrutiny of GoldBod’s operations and reported losses incurred by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
The dispute intensified after Mr Gyamfi described Mr Afenyo-Markin as an “extortionist” in response to the Minority Leader’s criticism and demands for accountability over the reported US$1.7 billion loss recorded by the BoG in 2025 under the gold purchase programme.
Mr Afenyo-Markin said he had initiated legal proceedings against Mr Gyamfi and media organisations that published or broadcast the statements in question.
“I have accordingly caused writs to be filed in Suit Number GT/1029/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited at the Accra High Court, and Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Eric Adjei and Peace FM at the Achimota Circuit Court,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the courts would determine the matter based on the evidence and applicable law.
“I have every confidence that in the fullness of time the court will make the appropriate determination,” he added.
The lawsuit comes after weeks of public exchanges between the Minority Leader and the GoldBod CEO over the financial performance of the DGPP and the extent to which the programme contributed to the reported losses.
Mr Afenyo-Markin has repeatedly demanded explanations from the government and GoldBod regarding the reported losses, while Mr Gyamfi has rejected allegations that GoldBod itself incurred the losses.
Mr Gyamfi has also maintained that the claims he made against Afenyo-Markin will be defended in court.
