The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is set to return to its traditional two-year cycle following a significant policy reversal by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

In December, CAF had announced plans to stage the continental championship every four years rather than every two.

That decision has now been overturned after an internal review. Under the earlier proposal, the governing body intended to introduce an African Nations League as a replacement biennial competition.

Officials later acknowledged, however, that the new league would require several years to generate sufficient revenue to become financially self-sustaining.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe confirmed the change in a statement: “The decision by the Executive Committee to reinstate the organisation of the Afcon every two years aims to advance, protect and promote the interests of African football and the 54 CAF Member Associations, as well as those of African players playing for clubs outside the continent.”

The move marks a return to the long-standing format that has defined African football’s premier national-team competition for decades. Yet the biennial schedule has repeatedly created friction with the global football calendar.

Most recent editions of AFCON have been staged in the middle of the European club season, forcing top African players to leave their clubs for several weeks at a critical point in the campaign.

The expanded 32-team FIFA Club World Cup, held in June and July last year, further complicated scheduling and pushed CAF toward mid-season dates for its flagship tournament.

Under the revised calendar, the next AFCON will take place in 2027. Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will jointly host that edition.

Subsequent tournaments are scheduled for 2028, 2031 and 2033. There will be no AFCON in 2030 because of the FIFA World Cup that year.

The decision to restore the two-year cycle is widely viewed as a response to pressure from national associations and players’ representatives who argued that a four-year gap would reduce competitive opportunities and diminish the tournament’s commercial and sporting value.

Many associations rely on AFCON for crucial ranking points, prize money and the development of their national teams. Players based in Europe and elsewhere also benefit from more frequent high-level international exposure.

CAF’s earlier plan for an African Nations League had been presented as a modernisation effort intended to create a more regular competitive structure similar to UEFA’s Nations League.

However, the financial projections proved challenging. Building a new competition capable of attracting significant broadcast and sponsorship revenue was expected to take several seasons, leaving a gap that many stakeholders considered unacceptable.

By reinstating the biennial AFCON, CAF has prioritised continuity and the immediate interests of its 54 member associations.

The organisation will still need to manage the ongoing tension between continental and club calendars. Discussions with FIFA and the major European leagues are expected to continue as African football seeks more favourable windows for its premier competition.

The most recent AFCON, held in 2025, produced one of the tournament’s most dramatic finals. Senegal were crowned champions on the pitch before being stripped of the title three months later, with Morocco declared the winners.

The episode underlined both the passion surrounding the competition and the governance challenges that occasionally accompany it.

With the two-year cycle restored, attention now turns to the 2027 tournament in East Africa. Joint hosting by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda represents a significant logistical and infrastructural undertaking, but also an opportunity to expand the competition’s footprint across the continent.

Subsequent editions in 2028, 2031 and 2033 will further test CAF’s ability to balance commercial growth, sporting integrity and the demands of an increasingly crowded international calendar.

For now, many in African football have welcomed the governing body’s U-turn as a pragmatic recognition that the traditional AFCON format remains central to the identity and development of the game on the continent.
