As part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery for his constituents, the Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri Constituency in the Eastern Region, Mr Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has donated GH¢208,745 to the Nsawam Government Hospital to support the expansion of its Out-Patient Department (OPD).

A cheque, drawn from the MP’s Common Fund allocation, was presented to the hospital management on Monday on his behalf by former Municipal Chief Executive, Emmanuel Owusu Arthur.

The donation follows a request by the management of the Nsawam Government Hospital, which has in recent years struggled with increasing patient numbers and inadequate space at its OPD, maternity, antenatal, laboratory, and neonatal units.

Hospital authorities indicated that the facility’s catchment population has significantly outgrown its existing infrastructure, creating overcrowding and placing enormous pressure on staff and resources.

The expansion project is therefore expected to provide additional space and improve healthcare delivery for thousands of patients who visit the facility annually.

Over the years, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh has built a strong reputation as one of the leading supporters of healthcare infrastructure development in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Constituency.

Beyond regular donations of medical equipment and logistical support to health institutions, the MP is currently financing the construction of an ultra-modern maternity ward at the hospital.

The project, which is nearing completion, includes additional theatre facilities and an expanded Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to cater for premature babies and complicated maternal cases.

Contractors have already returned to site to continue work on the facility.

Receiving the donation, the hospital administrator praised the MP for honouring a promise made during discussions held several weeks earlier regarding the challenges confronting the hospital.

According to him, management was delighted that Mr. Annoh-Dompreh had responded positively and swiftly to their appeal.

“Honourable promised us support and today he has fulfilled that promise. We are extremely grateful,” the administrator stated.

He disclosed that the hospital recorded more than 174,000 Out-Patient Department visits in the previous year alone, while over 5,000 deliveries and approximately 15,000 inpatient admissions were also recorded during the same period.

These figures, he explained, demonstrate the growing importance of the facility and the increasing pressure on its infrastructure.

According to the hospital administration, one of the biggest challenges remains overcrowding at the antenatal and maternity units, where pregnant women and nursing mothers are often forced to wait outside due to limited space.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which provides specialised care for premature babies, is also operating beyond its capacity, forcing some patients to be referred to hospitals in Koforidua, Accra, and other locations.

The administrator revealed that the expansion project would help address many of these challenges by increasing the hospital’s capacity to handle maternal and neonatal cases.

He noted that the new maternity block being funded by Mr Annoh-Dompreh would contain an additional NICU and a new theatre, thereby reducing congestion and improving healthcare outcomes.

Currently, he explained, the hospital operates with only two theatres despite performing approximately 5,000 major surgeries annually.

The addition of another theatre under the new maternity project is therefore expected to significantly improve efficiency and reduce delays in surgical procedures.

The hospital management also outlined plans for the prudent utilisation of the GH¢208,745 donation.

According to officials, the funds will be directed toward the expansion of the OPD, improvement of antenatal services, enhancement of laboratory facilities, and creation of additional space to improve patient flow and reduce overcrowding.

Management assured stakeholders that the funds would be used strictly for the intended purposes to improve healthcare services for residents of Nsawam-Adoagyiri and surrounding communities.

The Hospital Administrator further called on government and health authorities to consider upgrading the Nsawam Government Hospital into a secondary-level referral facility with a capacity of between 300 and 350 beds.

He argued that the hospital currently serves a vast catchment area, including patients from Amasaman, Pokuase, Ayensuano, Suhum, Akuapem South, and several adjoining districts, making a strong case for its elevation to a regional-level institution.

They expressed optimism that the OPD expansion project, together with the ongoing maternity ward construction, would significantly improve healthcare delivery and enhance the quality of medical services available to residents.
